Finding and choosing a profession is not detached from the rest of the personality function, for example from its operation on a personal level, as is often believed.
This apparent contradiction disappears if we consider one’s profession as a living being, as a life companion. The way we move in our profession, shows us how we move in the rest of our lives. So, when someone feels successful in his profession, but not in his personal life, this may be because he treats his/her partners in the same way in which he treats his profession. And the opposite.
Furthermore, one’s profession, in the sense that it provides him with a role, comes to define him, becomes one’s personal destiny. It combines something unique: It gives him a place among others, but at the same time one that is only his. It allows someone to be truly himself allowing himself at the same time to operate with others truly as a team. Its choice therefore is something very important.
This fact alone necessitates for the moment of career choice not to be temporally restricted, e.g. in high school, but to expand throughout the rest of our life converting it to a continuous horizon of self-development and evolution through our profession.
This becomes even more compelling nowadays, when the living conditions and the economic circumstances are continuously forcing someone to constantly evolve his original profession within itself or move along many different professions. According to a survey conducted recently in America, it was estimated that in the near future someone will change during the course of his life approximately up to five occupations.
The Analytical Psychotherapy Centre for Adolescents and Adults, considering one’s profession as his personal field of uninhibited creativity and development, and taking into account recent research findings around the need to develop a particular job flexibility and ingenuity, provides counselling sessions regarding career concerns at different ages and different stages of one’s life, focusing on different goals and objectives. To this end we use, along with interview techniques, a series of the most up-to-date psychometric assessment tools for professional guidance, together with structured discussions, a combination that proves to be an invaluable tool for this purpose.
Because our profession is the reserve of our freedom. And our prime cord with the world.
